Michelle Ives

I am a freelance book illustrator with a background in graphic design. I initially worked in publishing, where I produced a lot of educational comics and then, (after going back to university to study animation), I spent a few years in the animation industry working predominantly on concept art and character design as well as storyboarding.

Since starting a family I have returned to freelancing and now work mostly in children’s books, but have also quite recently turned to printmaking as an outlet for experimentation and a way to reinvigorate my art. I began by joining the printmaking class at the Howardian Centre and have now become a member of the Cardiff Print Workshop. In printmaking I find there is a freedom to experiment endlessly and I am able to explore the many aspects of art I enjoy, from spontaneous painterly expression all the way through to careful design work. Printmaking is proving to be immensely liberating to me as an artist, as well as extremely enjoyable.
